Charlotte Perriand/ La Maison au bord de l’eau - 1934, Louis Vuitton Tribute

Pursuing a collaboration based on a shared vision of women, Louis Vuitton is embarking on a new venture in the company of Charlotte Perriand. Having designed the “Icons” collection inspired by Perriand’s talent and lifestyle, Louis Vuitton is creating “La Maison au bord de l’eau” for Miami Art Week.

La Maison au bord de l’eau was designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1934. Internationally renowned for her pioneering designs, Charlotte Perriand also led the way in prefabricated holiday homes. She was incredibly passionate about this project, which was particularly important to her but was never actually realised. Destined for mass production, La Maison au bord de l’eau was aimed at a wide-ranging public as an ecological holiday residence, designed to be assembled and dismantled as required. Mounted on stilts, it could be sited in the middle of the countryside, or by the sea, a lake or river.

Eighty years after La Maison au bord de l’eau was conceived, Charlotte Perriand’s daughter and Louis Vuitton have teamed up to build the first prototype of this house, which reflects a generous 1930's utopia that links social needs with architecture, prefabrication technologies and home furnishings. It is a rare example of modern architecture where a house has been designed to be at one with the interior scheme and the furniture.

La Maison au bord de l’eau has been constructed according to the original plans, under the guidance of Pernette Perriand-Barsac who worked as her mother’s assistant for 25 years. The house is furnished, as Charlotte Perriand wished, with pieces she designed between 1929 and 1942 of which no original examples remain, only the drawings and photos in the archive. Each piece of furniture in the house is individually numbered and signed. Together, they form a unique heritage collection that respond brilliantly to the needs of contemporary living, a collection that has been revived thanks to Louis Vuitton.
