Industry Gallery/ Presenting Benjamin Rollins Caldwell
Industry Gallery, the only US gallery focused exclusively on twenty-first century design, opened in January 2010 in Washington D.C. Occupying over 4000 square feet of space in a converted auto repair shop, the gallery holds temporary exhibitions of work by designers selected for their ability to illuminate a broad spectrum of international design.
As the gallery’s name suggests, Industry presents designers who are creating new and innovative works with the use of modern industrial materials. These materials range from common items such as recycled magazine paper and glass to more sophisticated materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.
The gallery’s generous exhibition area allows each designer to tell his or her own story through site-specific installations designed to transform the perception of space. By loading the interior of the gallery with disparate items, each designer evokes complex and multiple associations to create a three-dimensional painting.
The gallery opened its second exhibition space in Los Angeles in March of 2011, in the historic Pacific Design Center, one of the West Coast’s top design destinations and home to a branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
